English Piano Lessons in Minato ku, Tokyo
Common Q and A
The following represent questions many people ask before they decide to being studying.
Q. How do we schedule lessons? How often does my child have a lesson?
Lessons are scheduled on a weekly basis at a specific, consistent time. Mondays to Fridays, between 4PM to 9PM, Saturdays between 8AM to 6PM. It is important they happen regularly, and without interruption.
Q. What is the earliest age that my child can take lessons?
Typical age for beginning a private lesson is 4 or 5. Some students are ready earlier, and some need to wait a little longer to begin.
Q. Am I too old to begin lessons?
No, you are never too old to learn piano. One of my oldest students started when she was 64 years old.
Q. How much is my child supposed to practice?
A young beginner can often do everything required in the assignment in 5 to 10 minutes of practice, as long as the practice takes place on a daily basis. Older, more advanced students are advised to practice the amount of time equal to a lesson on a daily basis, although this often does not happen.
Q. How long will it take me to be able to play?
That varies from student to student and really depends on the individual, how much practicing they do, and their age. Playing is a physical and mental skill so it does take repetition and time to improve. Typically, a four or five year old beginning piano can play a simple, recognizable tune within 4 or 5 weeks. Likewise, an adult student, in a few short weeks with regular practice, will improve dramatically. Most students take approximately one year to attain a level of proficiency.
Q. Is 40 min. long enough for a private lesson time for beginners?
Yes. In the beginning 40 min. lesson gives the student a lot to practice at home. In 40 min, they will get enough material to be able to learn well and develop proper technique. As they progress, at the advice of the teacher, they can go to a longer lesson time.
Q. Will music theory be included in the private lesson?
A certain amount of theory is essential to learn any instrument, but is not the focus of private lessons.
Q. Do you organize a recital?
Recital is planned once per year. Usually in winter or spring.
Q. Do we need a real piano at home to take piano lessons?
A digital piano is fine although a real (acoustic) piano is better. Most students stay in Tokyo only for a few years. If you are wary of buying a piano in the beginning, I can recommend reliable vendors for monthly or yearly piano rentals.
Q. Can I take summers off? (July and August)
Yes. A lot of students are from all over the world so if you need to take a break to go back to your homeland or family trips, please inform in advance.
